Spy x Family is set to receive a second season and theatrical film, both premiering in 2023. The announcement was made at the Jump Festa '23 event on Sunday and was soon followed up with an official tweet confirming the news, with a few more details about the projects.The first season of the Spy x Family anime, adapting Tatsuya Endo's manga, premiered on April 9, 2022. The first 12 episodes aired through June 25, whereupon the series took a break, and resumed on October 1. The twenty-fifth and final episode of this first season will air on December 24, 2022. Now it seems that even after that finale, viewers will not need to wait long to see more of Loid, Yor, and Anya.No details about the production of the second season have yet been given. So it remains to be seen if director Kauhiro Furuhashi and Wit Studio will return for the continuation, though that seems likely. The movie, meanwhile, was confirmed to be a completely original work, separate from the manga story adapted by the television anime, but it is confirmed to be produced under the supervision of Tatsuya Endo himself, who will be contributing the story and original character designs. The announcement tweet also included a teaser image for the movie drawn by Endo.
It makes sense to keep things going for Spy x Family, after the original manga started in March 2019 and has shown no signs of slowing down. The series is one of the premiere titles for Shueisha's Shonen Jump+ digital manga service, with over 27 million copies of its collected volumes in circulation as of October 2022.
Staggering out additional seasons like this also tracks with the modern release styles for Shonen Jump anime, forgoing the practice of yesteryear wherein series aired new episodes continuously. Only a few shows like One Piece continue with that schedule, while the likes of Spy x Family represent a more modern approach that gives adaptations a little more breathing room. It means fans will have to go without the lovable Forger family for a few months after the first season wraps next week, but between the new season and the movie, they won't be left wanting for long.
