Square Enix has filed two new trademarks that could hint at some upcoming projects related to the SaGa series. The trademarks, filed on October 13, are named "Emberstoria" and "SaGa Emerald Beyond", and they were spotted today thanks to Gematsu. Two new domains, Emberstoria.com and Emberstoria.net, were also registered by Square Enix back in May.

Series director and general producer Akitoshi Kawazu posted a Tweet at the end of last year in which he took the chance to thank fans for their support for the SaGa series and the upcoming remastered release of Romancing SaGa. Also, he stated that the company is making progress on a remaster, a remake, and a new work, but he did not elaborate on the nature of these projects.

One plausibility for the remastered work could be Unlimited Saga, the ninth entry in the SaGa series, and the only console game that never saw another re-release beyond its original run on the PlayStation 2.

As for the remake and the new work, they could be anything from a series with more than 20 years of history and 10 different installments, but the primary focus will always be the gameplay system. SaGa is known as a JRPG antithesis to Final Fantasy, as it counteracts many of the latter's defining points while embracing concepts that Final Fantasy has left behind from earlier installments in its series. Every SaGa entry has a complicated and non-linear gameplay system with an open-ended branching plot, unlike Final Fantasy's epic grand adventures. In addition, SaGa games assume an activity-based progression system that relies on the character's stats and battle decisions instead of experience points.

The Final Fantasy series has already hit new milestones in terms of storytelling and gameplay mechanics, as seen in Final Fantasy 7 Remake and Final Fantasy XVI, so it makes sense for the SaGa series to adopt a remake that tries to expand on Final Fantasy's modern gameplay, but in a way that stays faithful to the SaGa series' complicated and rewarding systems.

Romancing SaGa Remastered (Called Minstrel Song in Japan) will be released in December for PC, Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Android, and iOS.
