It was just announced that Atari is now taking applications for the first closed beta phase of the upcoming MMO Star Trek Online. I don’t know about you, but I’m a huge Star Trek fan. That, of course, was amplified by the new movie that came out earlier in the year. If you love Star Trek, love MMOs and would love to help Cryptic Studios troubleshoot their new MMO, head on over to startrekonline.com and give it a go! Just remember, beta testers aren’t there just for the fun of it, they’re there to break the game and report any bugs they come across.
Star Trek Online aims to mix space-faring action with planetary exploration when it is released and, of course, takes place in the timeline we all know and love – the main Star Trek timeline, not the one created in the recent movie “reboot”. However, it does take place several years after the events in the last “Next Generation” movie, Star Trek Nemesis. As the site explains, the game starts in the year 2409, where technology has improved and the galaxy has become more volatile.
Perhaps the game will go live next year, amid another rather volatile MMO environment. I really hope it does well when it does, perhaps it’ll bring the Star Trek experience to a whole new group of people.
