Who Is Depa Billaba, The Jedi Master?

Depa Billaba and her sister were orphaned when her parents, in search of a new home, were attacked by pirates. She was rescued by Jedi Master Mace Windu who recognized their force-sensitivity.

Depa Billaba began training under him and reached the rank of Jedi Master before the start of the Clone Wars. However, during the Clone Wars, she suffered grave injuries at the hands of General Grievous and was taken back to the Jedi Temple to heal.

During her time there, she met Caleb Dume who stopped an attack on the Temple. She immediately took a liking for him and invited him to become her Padawan. After that, she took up several missions and was eventually killed when Order 66 was executed. She gave up her life to secure her Padawan’s life, Caleb Dume, in whom her legacy survives.

Who Is Caleb Dume, The Jedi Apprentice On The Run?

Described as a “cowboy Jedi” by Dave Filoni, Caleb Dume was a Jedi Padawan to Depa Billaba. After her sacrifice during Order 66, Caleb roamed around the streets of Kaller until he was taken by the smuggler, Janus Kasmir. He learnt how to live as a fugitive hiding from The Galactic Empire, changed his name to Kanan Jarrus after leaving Kasmir, and left his Jedi ways for some time.

For around 8 years, he worked as a freighter pilot, bounty hunter, and other such roles. He ended up at the planet Gorse where he ran into Twi’lek rebel operative Hera Syndulla. The two worked together to take down an illegal mining operation and Caleb Dume, now Kanan Jarrus, joined her on her ship, the Ghost. The two also show a romantic interest in each other.

During an operation at Lothal, they met a 14-year-old force-sensitive boy named Ezra Bridger. He offered him to become his Padawan that ended up becoming frustating since he never completed his own training.

Kanan later realised that he was being hunted and was eventually captured and questioned by Darth Vader. They were later rescued by the Ghost and learned that they were part of a larger rebel operative. Here, he also met Ahsoka Tano and together with Ezra Bridger, they communed with Yoda who made him a Jedi Knight. He also instructed him to go to Malachor.

At Malachor, they met Darth Maul and three inquisitors where Darth Maul eventually blinded Kanan. He later met a mysterious Force wielder named Bendu who helped him connect with his other senses so that he could continue being a Master.

Caleb Dume, Now Kanan Jarrus’ Death

While trying to complete an operation on Lothal, Hera was eventually captured. Kanan raced off to save her but was stopped by a loth-wolf who spoke her earlier name, Caleb Dume. He returned and instructed Ezra to leave the mission of saving Hera over fears of his own emotions putting them at risk.

Eventually, they successfully save her and while waiting for Ezra to pick them up, Hera finally revealed that she loved him. However, before their getaway craft could leave, The Empire struck hard with open fire that exploded it.

Kanan used the force to hold the fire and shared one final look with Hera. He pushed them aside and was later consumed by the fire.

Three and a half decades later, Kanan is later heard and seen encouraging a young Rey Skywalker with other Jedi Masters to use her powers to destroy Darth Sidious.
