Star Wars: The Old Republic Navigates at About 1.7 Million Subscribers, Might Hit Two Million by June
Star Wars: The Old Republic has been labeled the fastest growing MMORPG of the genre’s history. It’s also without a doubt one of the most trolled the gaming industry has ever seen, with negative nancies predicting its doom at every corner. They even coined the word “TORtanic“, and looking at the related news they may just be right.
EA CEO John Riccitello told investors that the game had “nearly 1.7 Million subscribers” by the last official count at the end of February, with a “vast majority” of them past the initial free month and already paying their monthly fee.
On top of that extremely healthy and seemingly stable number Cowen and Company Vice President Doug Creuz estimates that it may be set to grow further.
We continue to feel comfortable with our Star Wars estimates which are an important part of our street-high FY13 non-GAAP EPS estimate of $1.36. We estimate 2MM paying subs by the end of June 2012 (and then sustained for the remainder of the year). We also note that the company plans to launch Star Wars in the Asia-Pacific region later this month
Indeed, Star Wars: The Old Republic may be a TORtanic: just like James Cameron’s movie with Leonardo DiCaprio it seems to be a definite success and is making a boatload of money.
