Swedish Authorities Raid Starbreeze Offices Under Suspicion of Insider Trading, One Person Arrested
A lone, unidentified individual was arrested in a surprise siege at the Starbreeze offices in Stockholm.
It’s been a hectic week for the folks over at Starbreeze amidst restructuring and the leaving of the publisher’s CEO. As of this morning though, it seems that this week has now become even crazier.
Earlier today, the Swedish Economic Crime Authority (ECO) stormed into the Starbreeze offices in Stockholm. The ECO states that the raid was related to insider trading and in the process of its siege, took away a handful of various documents and computers. Additionally, one person was arrested, with their identity having not been made public.
In a statement given to GamesIndustry.biz, Ann Charlotte Svensson, Starbreeze’s investor relations chief, said the company is not under any suspicion in the matter and that they will be fully cooperating with the ECO. Furthermore, this situation doesn’t coincide whatsoever with the company’s current reconstruction.
The full statement said as follows:
“On Wednesday Swedish Economic Crime Authority has conducted a search query at Starbreeze AB. The company has been informed that this has occurred due to suspicions of insider charges. The company as such is not subject to any suspicion. The company cooperates full with the Swedish Economic Crime Authority. The event does not affect the company or the ongoing business reconstruction.
Starbreeze has no further information on the matter.”
Even though this entire situation happened so close to the announcement of restructuring earlier in the week, these two events don’t seem to be related at all. Whatever crimes may have been occurring in the Starbreeze offices seemed to be stemming from the lone individual that was arrested. It’s an odd thing to hear to happen at a video game publisher, but luckily it doesn’t seem like this problem will find Starbreeze as a whole complicit in the potential crimes.
