While competition for the crown of digital PC games has grown in the coming months thanks to the likes of the Epic Games Store and others the market has grown even more crowded, though (for now) Steam remains the main digital game platform of choice, with the annual "Best Of" lists showing what games topped the charts in 2018.
Valve has launched its Best Of lists on the Steam store page that offer a look at the best-selling games on the platform in 2018. While the top sellers list on Steam doesn't give exact numbers or figures (other than by listing the games based on gross revenue), the "Platinum" level chart toppers included games such as Monster Hunter: World, PlayerUnknown's Battlegrounds, Assassin's Creed Odyssey, Far Cry 5, and more. You can find the full list of Platinum sellers below (measured by gross revenue):
- Assassin's Creed Odyssey
- The Elder Scrolls Online
- Civilization VI
- Monster Hunter: World
- Warframe
- Grand Theft Auto V
- Dota 2
- PlayerUnknown's Battlegrounds
- Counter-Strike: Global Offensive
- Far Cry 5
- Rocket League
- Rainbow Six Siege
After that, Steam also provided a list giving a month-by-month breakdown of the top new releases in 2018, assorted by gross revenue. It's here that you'll find a bit more of an eclectic list of games like Celeste and Dragon Ball FighterZ in January, Metal Gear Survive and Into the Breach in February, SoulCalibur VI and Return of the Obra Dinn in October, and more.
While there aren't any hard numbers or sales figures to compare against on other platforms, the Steam Best Of Lists always at least give some kind of indication of the games that manage to chart each year. And with an interesting mix of the expected chart toppers and some unexpected surprises, it continues to show the varying communities and mix of games that can thrive on PC.
