Steam’s Early Access system has come under a fair amount of fire over the this year, most notably when the game Towns was abandoned by its developer. Valve has apparently heard the complaints, changing its FAQ about the system.
You should be aware that some teams will be unable to ‘finish’ their game. So you should only buy an Early Access game if you are excited about playing it in its current state.
Previously, the FAQ did not contain wording that indicated that games in Early Access might not release.
In a statement to Venture Beat, Director of Marketing at Valve Doug Lombardi said that the changes were intended to “help set customer expectations.”
It became apparent that further clarification would help customers evaluate their potential purchase of Early Access titles. We think of Steam, Early Access, and game development as services that grow and evolve best with the involvement of customers and the community.
