Super Mario Meets Borderlands 3 in This Outstanding Cel-Shaded Cosplay

Akellyz, a professional cosplayer and prop maker, takes the well-known Mario to another cel-shaded level.

We all know Mario as this cute and dorky Italian plumber with some of the most iconic one-liners in gaming history although initially, he debuted as “Jumpman” in the arcade game Donkey Kong in 1981 and then renamed “Mario” in the 1982 arcade game Donkey Kong Junior. But this version of Mario is something very different indeed as he seemingly has merged with a character from Borderlands in an incredibly detailed cosplay for New York Comic Con this year.

The cosplayer in question here is Akellyz who is a pro at dressing up as well as being a prop maker from Mexico. Akellyz takes on the lovable Mario and adds a darker twist with a cel-shaded Borderlands 3-esque style with the familiar black lines embedded onto his skin that are unique to Vault Hunters in Borderlands and also characters in the Telltale series. The sheer amount of detail in this costume is unbelievable – everywhere you look you find something new. For instance, his lantern has a mini-boo inside of it, also spotted is a shy guy mask as an ornament on this left-hand side and a belt going over his chest with mini bombs and a star, a Chain Chomp weapon around his neck and also spotted is a ‘Piranha Plant’ that rises up from the top of his Bazooka.

In a post on Akellyz’s Instagram, we see a short clip of Yoshi up close who’s just chilling on Mario’s back – the little dinosaur even moves its head and blinks. This is just wholesome as hell. Akellyz is truly an extremely talented artist as well as a professional cosplayer, just by checking out all the pictures on his Instagram highlights the sheer creative ability he has with the likes of Joker, Batman, and Pennywise as part of his portfolio. It’s pretty easy to see why Akellyz won New York Comic Con’s previous contests in 2014 and 2015, making this his third victory when he won first place in this year’s contest.

To check out the many faces of Akellyz, you can head over to his Instagram, Twitter, or Facebook page and you can also keep up to date with his next cosplay idea here aswell.

If all this cel-shading has put you in the mood to play some Borderlands 3, the game is available now on Xbox One, PS4, and PC exclusively on the Epic Games Store. If Mario is more your thing, Mario & Sonic at the Olympic Games Tokyo 2020 releases for the Nintendo Switch on Nov. 5. It’s available for pre-order on Amazon now.
