SRW 30 – OG characters and mecha revealed

I’ve translated below the characters’ profiles from the official site:

The male OG protagonist, Edge Sainklaus, is voiced by Tomokazu Sugita and designed by Sachiko Kouno (I don’t need to introduce her if you’re actually reading this article). There’s also an OG villain voiced by Yuichi Nakamura.

Profile: “A young man who pilots Huckebein 30. He has a rough and detached personality. No one knows where he came from, and he refuses to share details on his past. But it’s likely he received intensive training for piloting mobile weapons.”

The female protagonist Az Sainklaus is designed by Miho Itoi (SRW D and J OG chara designer) and voiced by Mai Aizawa.

Profile: “A girl on the run with an unknown background. After a certain incident, she becomes the pilot of Huckebein 30. She’s a quiet person who avoids going out of her way to interact with other people, but she doesn’t completely rejects others either.”

Edge/Az pilot the Huckebein 30 designed by Hajime Katoki. It’s very similar to the bandages Huckebein from 2nd OG that was piloted by Ing, but it’s unrelated. Terada said we’ll have to play 30 to know the story behind it. A toy of the mecha is included in the super limited edition of the game.

The head of the Huckebein 30 has an XXX logo on it, it’s the 30th anniversary logo, designed by Katoki.

Profile: “A humanoid weapon developed under the XXX (Xenogeneicx Factorx Type) Project. The project’s name is abbreviated as XXX, and is read as “thirty’. Despite being a brand-new unit, mysteriously, it shows signs of repairs. It has pretty high-specs overall.”

The OG protagonists have vocal themes. Edge’s theme is Sasurai no Yaiba ~Sleeping Beast~, sung by Masaaki Endoh. Meanwhile, M.A.R.Y. 4 Tunes is singing Az’ theme, which is titled Divine Beast.

During the JAM Project interview before the concert part, Endoh mentioned how he did the OP for the Cybaster anime, and how it was Sugita’s debut anime. And of course they’ve been doing Umasugi Wave for over 14 years together. So he specifically made that song for Sugita.

SRW 30 – OG rival and mecha revealed

Caruleum Vaull, rival character designed by Shuji Sogabe and voiced by Yuichi Nakamura. Note that the seiyuu didn’t know who would voice who when they recorded for their own character. They didn’t know which series were in the game either.

Profile: “An alien who pilots the humanoid mobile weapon Gravalin. Always graceful and confident. He’s interested in mankind, its civilization and culture, and challenges Edge/Az.

He’s piloting the Gravalin designed by Masami Obari. It’s not related to the Granzon even if the name is similar. The name is a reference to Obari (varin=barin=bari). Terada said that since Katoki did the protagonist mecha, they definitely had to get Obari for the rival.

Gravalin profile: “A humanoid weapon presumed to have been developed using alien technology. It was supposedly developed to fight against human-designed weapons. It’s incredibly powerful and can handle many enemies by itself.”

Additional comments from the stream

  • The key visual has the original series that first appeared in SRW on front: Mazinger, Getter, and Gundam
  • Quattro stays as an ally till the end and doesn’t betray the team
  • You can switch between Kaido and Mamoru for the main pilot of Gaogaigo
  • Mazinkaiser Infinitism is originally a toy. Infinity‘s Kouji will be able to pilot it.
  • Terada didn’t pick the names of the OG characters himself.
  • Mai Aizawa, Tomokazu Sugita, and Yuichi Nakamura are intrinsically linked with Super Robot Wars, but they did proper auditions for the OG characters and everything. They weren’t picked out of favoritism.

Super Robot Wars 30 – New game systems, DLC

Tactical Area Select system: SRW 30 is a non linear game, you can pick which stage you want to do next on a map. The units you get are the same, but the order you’ll get them will be different depending on the order you do the stages. There are also side quests to grind money and experience. The game has an auto battle mode to make grinding easier too, though it doesn’t auto-use certain things like Spirits. You can either rush the main story, or do all the sidequests.

DLC – The game will have two DLC packs, adding nine guest units and 13 stages each. Each pack will mainly be protagonist mecha. The DLCs won’t add any main story elements. It’ll also include 2 mecha from SRW OG each, for a total of 4 SRW OG mecha. A season pass with all the DLCs will also be sold.

A pack of 15 bonus stages DLCs, this time with actual dialogues and story elements happening inbetween gaps of the main story, will also be released. (Just like what they did with SRW V, X,T).

The usual premium music pack that they did for V X and SRW T is also coming back too, but only in a digital edition.

Super Robot Wars 30 Trailer, release date

The game is releasing on October 28, 2021 on PS4, Switch, Steam.

As the stream ended, Nakamura and Aizawa most notably mentioned the game’s recording was a long time ago. So it was hard keeping quiet about their characters all this time. Hiyama hinted that he recorded his lines for 30 right after T. Okiayu also shared how Midorikawa lent him SRW 3 and 4 when they were younger, and after 4 he started buying the games too. Tetsu Inada also talked about how he actually participated in the debugging for some of the older games together with Midorikawa.

The stream also had several heartwarming moments. SRW got the Guinness record for “the most IP licenses used in a RPG series”. And they also celebrated Ichiro Mizuki’s career 50th anniversary. You can check out my live translation of the stream on YouTube if you’re interested: Part 1, Part 2, Part 3.

I’m really excited for SRW 30. The series list is really fun with several shows coming back after yeeeaars. What did you guys think of the stream? Remember you can always hit me up on Twitter @A_iyane07 to chat about SRW and otaku stuff.

English trailer and release date (July 12 update)

Bandai Namco Southeast Asia released the English trailer for Super Robot Wars 30, confirming the Asian English version is also coming on October 28. A message from producers Takanobu Terada and Shouhei Mogami was also published. They reexplained the Tactical Area Selection system and the Auto Battle system. I’ve also updated the names for the OG characters and mecha now that official spellings are out.

The usual end of stream shots from the seiyuu and staff:
