Nintendo dropped a bombshell of an announcement during its Nintendo Direct yesterday with the reveal that, yes, Super Smash Bros. is coming to the Nintendo Switch sometime later this year, and luckily it appears that the series creator will be back in the fight once more.

Following its announcement in this week’s Nintendo Direct, series creator Masahiro Sakurai confirmed via Twitter that he is indeed working on the next Smash Bros. game coming for the Switch later this year.

While it’s not known yet whether Sakurai himself will be directing the title (as he did on all four previous installments of the series) or taking on a different role (such as a producer or creative director), Sakurai did state that while “I am still at the stage of just announcing the title, but I keep silent and working day by day.”

As of now, details on the game are pretty scarce, but Sakurai urged to “please wait until the time that content can be released or released” as far as more information or updates about the game are concerned. Given that E3 is coming up in a few months, I think it’s safe to say that will be next stage where we might hear more about the next upcoming Smash Bros. title.

Super Smash Bros. is currently in development for Nintendo Switch and expected to arrive later this year. At this point, that’s all we know about it, but you can read our recent editorial speculating on what characters might show up in the Switch version.
