Super Smash Bros. Ultimate Director Sakurai Again Shoots Down Hopes of Goku Arriving as DLC Fighter
It's time to give up the ultimate dream, folks.
Super Smash Bros. fans have made one thing clear over the years: they want to see Dragon Ball’s Goku added to the game. Despite the repeated outcry though, Super Smash Bros. Ultimate director Masahiro Sakurai is here to say (once again) that it’s not happening.
While accepting an award recently at a Japanese Game Awards show for Super Smash Bros. Ultimate, Sakurai talked a bit about the game and some of the many requests he often sees from fans. Via a translation from Twitter user @PushDustIn, Sakurai said, “I get all these kinds of requests from abroad like, ‘Where is my believed Iron Man?’ or ‘where is my beloved Goku?’ However, basically (Smash) will only have content from video games in it.” It seems that even though Goku has appeared in video games of his own, Sakurai is keeping the game’s roster exclusive to those who are only known for being in games.

As mentioned, Sakurai over the years has continued to speak out against Goku specifically, letting fans know that he won’t be joining Super Smash Bros. Heck, earlier this year, Sakurai put out a similar statement in a book that again stated he wouldn’t be adding Goku to the game. Still, this hasn’t kept Smash fans from still holding out hope, for whatever reason.
Even though Sakurai has been known to be a troll over the years and has previously said characters like Ridley wouldn’t be joining Smash only for that to later change, it seems like we can probably take him at his word with Goku. Super Smash Bros. Ultimate is meant to be a celebration of video games as a whole and even though Goku has appeared in a fair number of games himself, he’s more well-known as being an anime character. While I’m sure many will still continue to keep their fingers crossed in hopes that this is just the ultimate troll move by Sakurai, it’s surely not happening.
Time to redirect those hopes and dreams into Waluigi joining the roster, instead.
