Today, publisher Focus Home Interactive and developer Deck 13’s science-fiction, hardcore-action, Souls-like RPG, The Surge, has received HDR support on PS4 and PS4 Pro via a new update.

Thanks to the update, players can now enjoy more natural lighting, a wider color range, and enhanced details at contrasted levels of brightness: thus creating more realistic and immersive visuals.

For those that don’t know: HDR (high dynamic range) is a technique used to reproduce greater dynamic range of luminosity than is possible with standard digital imaging. The aim of the technique is to present a similar range of luminance that is experience through the actual human visual system, but is normally lost in digital imaging. Basically, it makes your colors more vibrant and offers more of a spectrum of color, and takes your blacks and whites and makes them sharper.

HDR, a recent buzzword of sorts, has gained prominence in video games in the last few years, and was notably a big selling point for the PS4 Pro (though the PS4 also supports HDR) and the Xbox One S.

If you decide to activate HDR within the base console settings, you will then see the option in-game under video settings to toggle HDR on or off at your leisure. The update also notably introduces a number of gameplay tweaks and bug fixes. You can read the full patch notes here. There is no word when this update will hit Xbox One or PC, the game’s other two platforms.

The Surge is an action RPG set in a heavily dystopian future as Earth nears the end of its life. Those who remain in the overpopulated cities must work to survive as social programs have become saturated with an aging population and people effected by increasing environmental diseases. Meanwhile, intelligence of technology has left many humans without jobs, forcing them to head out into the suburbs seeking labor, aided by exoskeletons to improve their efficiency and be more on par with machines.

The World of The Surge is described as a very grim vision of the future, where the evolution of technology, society, and our relation with the environment has led to a decadent state of the Human civilization. The following features list is provided:

  • Tight, visceral hardcore action RPG combat
  • Unique targeting, dismemberment and level up systems
  • Explore a dystopian world full of mystery
  • Battle an array of huge, fearsome bosses
  • Loot, craft, and upgrade new weapons and armors

The Surge is available for $59.99 USD on PC, PS4, and Xbox One, where it launched last month. If you want — you can check out our review of the game here, and its recent accolades trailer, here.
