Surviving the Aftermath, a New Game from Paradox Interactive, Is Available Now

Paradox's newest "Surviving" game launches in Early Access.

Paradox Interactive is virtually synonymous with city-building and strategy games. They’ve published a number of classics in these genres, both new and old. Most recently, Surviving Mars, Stellaris, and Battletech have made some waves. Today we get a new game from the monolithic publisher: Surviving the Aftermath, a new survival-colony-builder game, is now in Early Access on PC and Xbox One. The full game will launch sometime in 2020.

Surviving the Aftermath is the next chapter in Paradox’s “Surviving” brand. However, where Surviving Mars allows people to colonize a new planet, Surviving the Aftermath envisions a bleaker future. You’ll control a few survivors as they work to rebuild society in the “aftermath” of world-ending catastrophe.

You’ll not simply defend a shelter, though–you’ll want to expand into the barren wasteland and recruit more survivors and resources. As you send survivors out to gather intelligence about the surrounding world, however, you’ll expose them to all manner of hazards. Not everyone you meet will commit to rebuilding, and environmental dangers continue to ravage the land.

Surviving the Aftermath seeks to build on the lessons Paradox Interactive has learned from other forays into the city-building genre. Nikhat Ali, Lead Producer on Surviving the Aftermath, remarked that “Throughout Surviving Mars’ development we learned the importance of listening to our community and their feedback helped elevate that game to new heights.” The genre certainly has a dedicated community, and I’m certain that listening to player-feedback can only benefit this game in the long-run.

Like many other games that Paradox Interactive has published, Surviving the Aftermath has an ambitious post-launch plan. Ali says that the game will have “monthly updates” and that the developers will continue to “incorporate feedback from players.” Among other things, these updates will include diplomacy and combat options between colonies, expanded tech trees, and new endgame content.

Of course, it’s really too early to be talking about updated content–the game is still brand new. Now is your chance to get in at the ground floor of this promising new release.

Surviving the Aftermath is available in Early Access on the Epic Games Store and through Xbox Game Preview for $19.99.
