From its titles like The Walking Dead series, The Wolf Among Us, Tales from the Borderlands, and more, Telltale Games defined itself as the home for engaging storytelling and characters, though as previous reports seem to have confirmed, the studio has unfortunately revealed that it will be closing down in the near future.Following reports earlier today of major layoffs from within the company, Telltale Games confirmed in an official statement that the studio will "begin a majority studio closure," with the studio explaining that it faced significant obstacles (mainly financially) in a year "marked by insurmountable challenges."Telltale detailed that while the majority of the company's staff were let go today as a result of the closure, around 25 employees will remain with the company to fulfill final obligations to the company's board and partners. At the moment, that means several of Telltale's current projects are up in the air, such as the current final season of The Walking Dead, which is set to release its second episode next week. As for some of the studio's projects that it had on the horizon, such as a second season of The Wolf Among Us and a game based on Netflix's Stranger Things, those projects will more than likely be cancelled as a result of the impending closure. The company's current CEO Pete Hawley explained in a statement that "it's been an incredibly difficult year for Telltale as we worked to set the company on a new course," and stated simply that the company "ran out of time to get there," as the company notably faced layoffs last year and company-wide restructuring, in an attempt to recoup from financial struggles.Despite the saddening news of the company's impending closure, Hawley stated that "we released some of our best content this year and received a tremendous amount of positive feedback," adding that he hopes for the company's departing staff to "spread our brand of storytelling across the games industry."Telltale closed its statement by saying that further information and details on the studio's slate of current and previously-announced projects will be provided "in the coming weeks." You can find Telltale's full statement below.[UPDATE] Several reports from sources within Telltale (cited at USGamer and Game Informer) have suggested that the remaining skeletal staff at Telltale Games may be staying on to finish work on the previously-announced adaptation of Minecraft: Story Mode for release through Netflix. Likewise, this potentially means that The Walking Dead: The Final Season may end up going unfinished and cancelled halfway through its planned four-episode run.At this time, Telltale Games has not officially given an answer just yet on what will happen with The Walking Dead: The Final Season, so stay tuned in the meantime for official details from the studio as they develop.
