Tetsuya Nomura Reveals New Details on Kingdom Hearts 3 Re:Mind DLC [UPDATED]
Tetsuya Nomura detailed the Kingdom Hearts 3 Re:Mind DLC and also commented on the new E3 2019 trailer.
This week’s Famitsu magazine included an interview with Square Enix’s Tetsuya Nomura about Final Fantasy 7 Remake. At the beginning of the interview, however, Tetsuya Nomura gave more details on the upcoming Kingdom Hearts 3 DLC. Here’s everything new he revealed. Be wary of spoilers.
Nomura started by mentioning how he often gets asked the meaning behind “Re:Mind”, the title behind the DLC, even the promotional staff asks him. He said that it means just that, to remember something, but it also has a double meaning related to the DLC’s content.
The Famitsu reporter also mentioned that in the DLC’s newest trailer revealed at E3 2019, we see Riku, Aqua and Roxas, how they’re playable, and how they’re fighting Organization XIII characters. The reporter asked Nomura if these are fights part of the DLC’s main story, or if they’re “Limit Cut” fights. Nomura answered that they’re part of the main story.
“Limit Cut” fights are what they call in Japanese the Organization XIII Data Battles, the harder, bonus boss fights against each member that was one of the new additions in Kingdom Hearts 2 Final Mix. They are called that because when you fight them in the main story, the developers made them “limited” so players can beat them and progress through the game.
With that said, Tetsuya Nomura added that while he can’t give out too many details yet, the Re:Mind DLC will include at least as many “Limit Cut” bonus fights as in Kingdom Hearts 2 Final Mix, meaning at least 13.
In summary, Tetsuya Nomura mentioned that the DLC has story content and bosses you’ll see as you play it normally, “Limit Cut” story content, at least 13 “Limit Cut” bosses, and secret story content and secret bosses.
The E3 2019 trailer also shows Sora using a new form of his Oathkeeper Keyblade. Tetsuya Nomura stated that this new form will be released as free DLC at the same time as the Re:Mind DLC.
The Re:Mind DLC is supposed to launch this Winter. Tetsuya Nomura gave a slightly narrower estimate at the end of the interview. He mentioned how the DLC needs to go through the CERO ratings again, which will take some time, but they wish to release it “as soon as possible’. Nomura also mentioned they wish to release the DLC long enough before Final Fantasy 7 Remake, which releases on March 3, 2020.
Update: One of the footnotes of the interview I initially missed also concerned Kingdom Hearts 3 Re:Mind. Tetsuya Nomura mentioned that as you progress through the additional scenario of the Re:Mind DLC, there’s a certain moment where a selection screen pops up, asking you which character to play as. This is how you play as either Aqua, Riku or Roxas. He didn’t specify if it is the only moment we play as them or not though. I think there’s a high chance it isn’t. He also mentioned how the additional scenario of the Re:Mind DLC can only be played if you cleared Kingdom Hearts 3.
Nomura: In the base game, there’s times where you control Riku or Aqua. Similar to that, as you progress through the additional scenario of the DLC, a character select screen will appear at some point. The additional scenario DLC can only be played if you cleared the main game.
