Supermassive Games' The Dark Pictures Anthology Planned to be 8 Games Long

The Dark Pictures: Man of Medan is just the beginning of an 8 game anthology from Supermassive Games.

July 11, 2019

In a new interview with the CEO of Supermassive Games, the developers of Until Dawn, we get more details about how long their new horror anthology will be and how each new entry will be different. Like Until Dawn, The Dark Pictures Anthology will be centered around the horror genre. The only similar aspect of each Dark Pictures game will be a character called The Curator.

“We have an arc in mind that plays over eight games,” said Supermassive Games CEO Pete Samuels. “He’s really the only consistency across the Anthology. Everything from a story, character perspective, we want to be a surprise. We want to surprise people each time – when we announce the second game, we want it to be the last thing people expected, in terms of theme and subgenre and whatever. And then again with the third one. We have them mapped out for the first eight.”

When asked how often The Dark Pictures Anthology games will come out, Samuels said they plan to release two per year. Additionally, each game will have a different director, screenwriters, actors, and separate development teams. Like Until Dawn and Man of Medan, the other games in the Anthology will be narrative based with a variety of dialogue options and QTEs.

“They’ll largely be the same mechanics,” Samuels said. “We’ve no plans to introduce anything else. What we will do is, if we find we need something to tell the story – because that’s what our mechanics are there for, to tell a story – if we need something else to tell a story well then we won’t be afraid to prototype that.”

The Dark Pictures: Man of Medan launches on August 30 for PS4, Xbox One, and PC.
