The Game Awards Adds New Award Category That Recognizes Accessibility
This year's Game Awards will introduce a new award category that highlights accessibility options in video games.
In a post on his Twitter account, Geoff Keighley announced that this year’s Game Awards will feature a new award which highlights accessibility.
As his tweet mentions, the Innovation in Accessibility award is “recognizing developers that are pushing the medium forward by adding features, technology and content to help games be played and enjoyed by an even wider audience.”

Earlier today, Keighley announced that The Game Awards will air on December 10 and it’ll be live across Los Angeles, Tokyo, and London. Like any other event effected by the COVID-19 pandemic, The Game Awards won’t have an in-person crowd. No specific time of the broadcast has been mentioned yet.
“We have specialists and we’ll ask our regular jury what they think about accessibility,” said Keighley in an interview with Gamesbeat. “But I really want people who are experts to recognize the work for a colorblind mode or other things.”
Last year’s Game Awards had a 75 percent increase in viewership compared to 2018’s show, meaning that roughly 50 million people watched the broadcast. Major game announcements were made including the reveals of Bravely Default II, Godfall, and The Wolf Among Us 2. Additionally, Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice won the Game of the Year award and best action/adventure game.
Going back to game accessibility, it’s been a large topic in the gaming industry for several years. One of the most notable games to include accessibility options is The Last of Us Part II, which features over 60 accessibility options for gamers. Other games like Ghost of Tsushima, Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order, and Overcooked are just some that have added accessibility options this year. Adding the award category to the Game Awards is an awesome addition that will continue to showcase the importance of adding accessibility in games going forward.
The Game Awards air on December 10. As more news comes about this year’s show, we’ll be sure to let you know.
