The Game Awards Partnered With Subway to Give Away Free Games
The Game Awards and Subway unexpectedly gave away free game codes for some of this year's best independent titles.
With big help from Subway, The Game Awards was able to give away free game codes to fans through Twitter. The Game Awards is an event run and hosted by Geoff Keighley where fans and industry folk alike get to recognize some of the best games for their accomplishments in the year. Originally, the show has undergone backlash regarding bias as well as more frivolous criticism such as an award being presented by Subway. I’ll admit, I was one of those people wondering why is there a specific award that is being sponsored by a fast-food chain. Well, now we know exactly why.
Our friends @Subway are helping us give away some games from this year’s Fresh Indie Developer nominees!Advertisement

The company presented the “Fresh New Indie” award for the show which celebrates the best indie titles from a new studio. The nominees included Disco Elysium, Gris, Slay the Spire, My Friend is Pedro, Outer Wilds, and Untitled Goose Game. Once the show concluded The Game Awards posted a tweet allow those who replied simply with “#FreshIndieDeveloper” would get a direct message allowing them to receive a code of one of the participating nominees. Untitled Goose Game was the only game that was not available for redemption. The codes given out for all titles were specifically for PC. Slay the Spire was also redeemable for Xbox One.
At first, this sponsorship by Subway seemed odd, but now knowing the reason behind it is really cool to see. Ever since the creation of The Game Awards, it has been criticized no matter how bad or good the show ends up being, but seeing that Keighley was able to get a partnership to help get small indie titles into more player’s hands is more worth applauding and then some. Each nominee this year is great for different reasons, so if you’re looking for a new game to play check one of them out. I hope a giveaway of the same caliber becomes a reoccurring thing every year moving forward because at the end of the day The Game Awards is about celebrating and playing video games.
