In a trailer shared on YouTube today, publisher Forever Entertainment has announced that the horror-themed rail shooter The House Of The Dead: Remake is coming to PlayStation 5 a this week on January 20.

The game will be released digitally via the PlayStation Store, and according to the game's official Twitter account, all owners of the game on PlayStation 4 will be able to upgrade to the next-gen version free of charge.

Initially launching on the Nintendo Switch in April last year, The House Of The Dead: Remake has since been published on PlayStation 4, Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One, PC, and Stadia. Polish studio MegaPixel Games (a subsidiary of Forever Entertainment) has handled all versions of the remake, including the upcoming PlayStation 5 release.

As the title might indicate, The House Of The Dead: Remake is a remake of the arcade shooter The House Of The Dead, originally released in 1996 by Sega. Its cabinet coming equipped with a pair of light guns, the original arcade game invited players (one to two at a time) to aim and fire at approaching zombies until either the players' health is depleted or all levels were cleared.

Following the overwhelming success of the initial arcade release, Sega ported The House Of The Dead to the Sega Saturn in 1998, and then to PC systems later that same year. The Sega Saturn port of the game came packaged with Sega's sonic-blue Virtua Gun - itself a port of-sorts of the light gun built into the original arcade cabinet - but the game could also be played with a regular handheld controller.

Although the evolution of television specs has long since rendered traditional light gun technology obsolete, The House Of The Dead: Remake has offered a variety of control schemes on all systems since its Nintendo Switch launch, from gyroscope support on the Switch to PS Move compatibility on the PlayStation 4. MegaPixel Studio has yet to announce the control options of the PlayStation 5 version, but fans are hoping the game will at least take advantage of the DualSense controller's unique capabilities.

The House Of The Dead: Remake will be available on PlayStation 5 on January 20. At launch, this version will only be available as a digital download, with MegaPixel Studio and Forever Entertainment having yet to announce any plans for a physical release.
