The Last of Us Creative Director Questions Magazine for Removing Ellie From Its Cover Artwork
Normally, when publishers send artwork of their games to be used for a magazine’s cover, it goes on print without major changes. This doesn’t seem to be the case for issue 106 of the multi-national European magazine Gamereactor, that published an illustration of The Last of Us on its cover, with a twist.
Apparently Naughty Dog sent the magazine an illustration with both Joel and Ellie, but the editors of the magazine saw it fit to remove the female lead from the cover, for reasons unknown. This prompted The Last of Us Creative Director Neil Druckmann to send a rather pointed tweet demanding an explanation.
Hey Gamereactor, appreciate the coverage, but is there a reason why you removed Ellie from the cover we provided? http://t.co/jG3vsX6BG4

Below you can see the published cover. As you can easily notice Ellie really isn’t there, and Joel looks most definitely lonely with all that empty space around him.
At the moment Gamereactor didn’t yet provide an explanation or a response on any public channel, so we can’t really say much on what may have caused the decision to omit Ellie from the magazine’s cover. We’ll keep you updated if anything relevant surfaces.
