HBO’s upcoming TV adaptation of Naughty Dog’s The Last of Us appears to have wrapped production of its pilot episode.

Director Kantemir Balagov took to Instagram to declare “My job here is done.” He went on to say, "I’m really grateful for the opportunity. It was a great experience with ups & downs." While Balagov didn’t explicitly confirm that production had concluded, his words strongly imply that this is the case.

The director also shared some materials from the set in his post, one visibly showing The Last of Us logo along with shout-outs to other crew members. He ended the post by saying “P.S. Back to Mother Russia.” Other directors confirmed to be helming episodes of HBO’s The Last of Us also include Jasmila Žbanić and Ali Abbasi.

WHAT IS THE LAST OF US ABOUT?

The HBO series will adapt the first game, which came to PlayStation consoles in 2013. The game blended survival horror and cinematic storytelling with third-person gunplay that was reminiscent of Naughty Dog’s Uncharted series. A sequel, The Last of Us Part 2 launched in 2020 to much critical acclaim.

In the games, a fungus called Cordyceps has turned the human population into zombies. The story involves grieving father Joel being tasked with escorting a teenager called Ellie across a perilous post-apocalyptic landscape in the hopes of finding a cure for the Cordyceps.

There’s currently no word on when HBO’s The Last of Us will release, but the cast has been revealed. Pedro Pascal will star as Joel, Bella Ramsey as Ellie, Gabriel Luna as Tommy, Anna Torv as Tess. The series is being written and developed by Craig Mazin and Neil Druckmann.
