The Long Dark Reaches $100,000 and Unlocks Oculus Rift at Base Goal, The Majestic Aurorae Detailed
The Long Dark has reached $100,000 and is halfway to its base goal of $200,000. With the project attaining its halfway goal today, Oculus Rift support has been switched from its previous $250,000 stretch goal and is now attainable at the base goal.
The team at Hinterland Games has also released details on the game’s aurora, which is present in all of the artwork present on its Kickstarter and Facebook pages. The nation’s telecommunications and power grids lie in ruin in the wake of a solar superstorm, however the aurorae represents a welcome respite from what will otherwise a constant intolerable situation.
“During flare-ups of Aurora activity, there can be so much electromagnetic energy that some electrical devices within a localized area might become powered. This manifests as streetlights suddenly flaring up or pulsing with light,” the developers wrote on the game’s Kickstarter page, “locations like hospitals, police stations, banks, that use electronic security systems and vaults, might suddenly become accessible again in the presence of an active Aurora, vs. inanimate bricks you have no chance of disturbing.”
This means that streetlights, flashlights, short-range radios, and other small electronics may function in the event of a strong enough aurora. On the flip-side, venturing into buildings that are lit during an aurora may be treacherous for the player if the aurora passes, leaving the player alone, in darkness.
The Long Dark is being developed by Hinterland Games for the PC, Mac, and Linux. The developers are shooting for an October 2014 release, and hope to eventually have the game released on PlayStation 4 and Xbox One as well. As of this post, the game has amassed over $101,000 of its $200,000 goal.
