The Next Unreal Tournament Game Will be Created in the Open and with Help from Fans
Epic is getting ready to create the next Unreal Tournament. They’re doing something quite interesting with this one however. Instead of it being created in standard closed development, this next Unreal game will be developed in the open. A team of UT veterans and fans of the series will work together to bring this game to life.
So how is this going to work? Starting today, all aspects of the game’s creation will be posted in the UT forums and there will be regular updates on TwitchTV. Fans of the series are encouraged to participate in the development process and to give feedback about what they want in the game. The game will be a competitive FPS like the others in the series and development is focused on Windows, Mac and Linux.
Since the game is being created from scratch it will take a while for it to be playable by gamers. When it is playable however it will be free. Not free to play but free. To pay for the cost of the game there will eventually be a marketplace set up where developers, modders, artists and gamers can give away, buy and sell mods and content. The earnings will be divided between the mod/content creator and Epic.
This is a very unprecedented thing for a company to do but I think it’s brilliant. As Epic admits, there will probably be a few hitches along the way but the fact that they are willing to create the next Unreal Tournament game in this manner is pretty freaking cool.
