For the past several years, developer Red Barrels has terrified players with its ongoing Outlast franchise. From the release of the original game in 2013 to the debut of its sequel in 2017Outlast has taken its idea of putting players in the midst of a "found footage" style horror experience has resulted in some terrifying stories. However, the traditionally single-player horror franchise is venturing into uncharted waters with its next installment The Outlast Trials, which is kicking off a new series of terrors next year.

During The PC Gaming Show, developer Red Barrels shared a new teaser trailer for its upcoming title, The Outlast Trials. Initially, the teaser starts out with a creepy sequence that feels right out of a horror movie like Saw or Hostel before transitioning into a cinematic sequence that shows off the intense vibes that the Outlast series is known for. The trailer also revealed that The Outlast Trials will officially release sometime in 2021 on PC for now, though it's unclear if the game will also make its way to consoles at some point.

The new game by Red Barrels was officially revealed at the end of last year, and marks a notable departure from past installments of the Outlast series. Notably, The Outlast Trials will mark the first multiplayer-focused entry of the series, which will allow up to four players to band together and try to survive in a co-op focused experience. Likewise, the game will also not be a direct sequel to the original two games, but will instead take place in the overall Outlast universe and will be set during the Cold War.

The Outlast Trials is currently in development for PC and expected to release sometime in 2021.
