Last year Ubisoft Dusseldorf revealed their intentions to revive The Settlers by re-releasing the classic games and creating a brand new one with franchise creator Volker Wertich. We have not heard much about the new game since then, but The Settlers reemerged at Gamescom 2019 and Ubisoft confirmed that it would be coming out on PC in 2020.

As was previously confirmed, The Settlers actually runs on the Snowdrop engine, used for games such as Tom Clancy’s The Division 2, meaning it can take advantage of the procedural map generation technology available in many of its peers. In terms of gameplay, Ubisoft is hoping that this new game will capture the series’ bustling, or Wuselig as the developers are calling it, feeling. Ubisoft also highlighted three different modes spanning PvP and PvE: Campaign, Multiplayer, and Skirmish.

This new game in The Settlers series will also feature three strategies for victory. The combat strategy has players defeating all enemy armies with their own, while the glory strategy lets players win as they come on top in battles with hero characters in order to cause revolts. There will also be a Faith victory, but Ubisoft is not discussing that at Gamescom. Check out some early concept art of the game below:

Like recent Ubisoft titles such as Tom Clancy’s The Division 2 and Anno 1800, The Settlers will be available through both the Uplay Store and the Epic Games Store. The Settlers will also be part of Uplay+, a subscription service unveiled by Ubisoft at E3, when it launches next year. Ubisoft also took this opportunity to reveal the four different versions of the game that will be available to pre-order.

Of course, there is the standard edition of the game, but players can also pre-order The Settlers Gold Edition right now. That version of the game will include the Monuments & Merchants expansion that is already planned for the game as well as two decoration items called the Gazebo of Tranquility and the Wishing Well. The game will also be getting two physical releases in Europe.

Those in Austria, Germany, Poland, and Switzerland can get The Settlers Entdecker Edition to receive the Gazebo of Tranquility, three lithographs based on the game, and The Settlers' soundtrack. 5,000 Collector’s Editions that contain an artbook, the aforementioned expansion, items, lithographs, and soundtrack, a letter from Volker Wertich, and some flower seeds will also be distributed in Europe. Finally, no matter what version of the game you pre-order, you will also be receiving the decorative Statue of the First Settlers.

All of these versions of The Settlers will be coming out for PC sometime in 2020 on both Uplay and the Epic Games Store.
