TBS & Buzzfeed Announce The Sims Spark’d, a Reality Competition Show
The Sims Spark'd begins airing July 14 on TBS
It feels like I’ve been writing a lot about video game TV shows recently. First, it was Disco Elysium getting the TV treatment, followed by the wild and strange My Friend Pedro. TV adaptations for these two make sense – they’re an engaging mystery and an action movie, respectively. Today’s game-to-TV show announcement of The Sims Spark’d is certainly more out of left field, and unlike anything we’ve seen before.
The Sims Spark‘d is the product of a partnership between Eleague, a gaming entertainment brand owned by TBS, and BuzzFeed Multiplayer, and will come in the form of a reality competition show. If it’s not super clear what that is, just imagine those cooking shows on Food Network where someone has to prepare a four-course meal with hardware tools. The Sims Spark’d seems to be drawing inspiration from shows like that, albeit toned extremely down. Instead, the show will have contestants battle it out in creative challenges to build unique homes, characters and storylines to connect them all. These creations will then be judged by a panel of three Sims experts; Kelsey Impicciche, a Buzzfeed Multiplayer YouTube personality, Tayla Parx, who has done voice acting for the series, and Dave Miotke, one of the developers at Maxis. The entire affair is to be M.C’d by former American Idol finalist Rayvon Owen. The show’s 12 contestants aren’t just playing for fun either – there’s $100,000 on the line. So far, the list of contestants hasn’t been revealed, but a trailer for the show shows prominent Sims YouTubers and Twitch streamers such as Plumbella, Steph0Sims, The EnglishSimmer, SpringSims and Dr.Gluon.
The four-episode long show begins this upcoming Friday, July 17. Viewers can catch it on TBS at 11 P.M EST every Friday following the 17, or the following Monday after a broadcast. If watching TV isn’t your style anymore (it’s 2020, come on), you can catch a live stream of each episode the Monday after they air on BuzzFeed Multiplayer.
