Is 'The Suicide Squad' a Sequel? Should You Watch the 2016 Version First?

Ever since the trailer of The Suicide Squad came out, people wonder if it is a sequel to 2016's Suicide Squad. That's because, similar to the previous movie, James Gunn's version also features Margot Robbie as Harley Quinn. Besides her, Joel Kinnaman, Viola Davis, and Jai Courtney also take back their previous roles.

Well, James Gunn pretty much made it clear that The Suicide Squad isn't a sequel; instead, it's a stand-alone movie.

In an interview with The New York Times, Gunn said that he wanted The Suicide Squad to be "Its own thing completely," So, even though the upcoming movie has some returning characters and actors, it doesn't have any relation to the Suicide Squad (2016). It pretty much clears up that you don't need to watch the previous movie to understand everything in The Suicide Squad.

However, if you need any further clarification, James Gunn also answered this same question on Twitter. Replying to a tweet, Gunn said that "You don’t have to have seen any other film to understand everything in The Suicide Squad." So, you can enjoy the movie even if you are a complete stranger to the DCEU.

The Suicide Squad already had a theatrical release in the UK and received positive reviews from critics. However, the movie will release in the US Cinemas on August 5th, and on the same day, you can stream it on HBO Max.
