Given its protracted development cycle and high anticipation coming from Braid creator Jonathan Blow, the PS4 and PC title The Witness has already seen substantial success in its first since release, with the title having reached a large milestone already.
Blow confirmed in a blog post on the game’s official website that since its launch last week, The Witness has sold “substantially more than 100,000 units,” with the title also generating over $5 million USD in gross revenue from its first week.
Blow explained that while he can’t reveal the exact sales numbers by platform “because often when we sign a deal with a particular store, we agree not to reveal their sales numbers,” he did mention that “neither of these platforms dominates our sales; PC is very strong for us, and PSN is very strong for us.”
As previously mentioned by Blow, The Witness is already on track to surpass the initial success of his previous hit Braid, with the title having already seen “a good chunk more revenue in one week than Braid made in its entire first year.”
Even when adjusted for inflation and compared to The Witness‘ higher price compared to Braid ($39.99 vs. $14.99 respectively), Blow detailed that “by number of units, the first week of each individual platform handily beats Braid’s first week of sales.”
While the title has seen great success so far, Blow mentioned that the title has not quite broke even just yet on its development costs, though explained that “as time goes on, we should break even and make a comfortable safety margin on top of that, which will allow us to make more nice games in the future.”
Blow capped off that he and his team are currently working to address various bugs and graphics driver problems for the PC version of the title, while the title is also under consideration for other platforms, including Mac, iOS, Android, and Xbox One down the line – future updates will be provided later on.
The Witness is available now for PS4 and PC.
