With the upcoming multi-platform release of the modern Persona trilogy, many people will be experiencing these games for the first time. Persona 5 Royal in particular can be overwhelming for first-timers with its various mechanics.

Whether this is your first Atlus JRPG or you are a series veteran, hopefully, there is something here that you did not know before. Here are things everyone should know before starting Persona 5 Royal.

10 Fuse Everything

Possibly the biggest piece of advice for new players is to utilize the velvet room and its mechanics liberally. It’s important not to get too attached to any of your Persona’s. Fusing a majority of your party together will both help fill out your compendium and will almost always be an upgrade over what you are using now.

This system also allows you to carry over the skills of your choice to your new Persona. Fusing heavily will also make finishing the Strength confidant much easier

9 Master the Baton Pass System

The baton pass makes a return from vanilla Persona 5, but this time it is a much bigger part of the combat. The ability to baton pass (chaining enemy weaknesses and ‘passing’ to a teammate for a buff on their next attack) was limited by how far you had advanced your party's confidant rank. This would result in battles where not everyone in your party was able to pass, or you were stuck running the same party.

This time around the ability is possible from the beginning and is so core to the game’s battles that the game outright tells you to utilize it during the true final boss. Aside from it being really fun to plan attacks ahead of time factoring in the baton pass system, it also makes battles significantly easier. Do your best to master the mechanic early on.

8 Advance Councilor and Faith Confidants to Unlock the Third Semester

Among the many story and technical changes from Persona 5 vanilla, the most major is the addition of two new major characters and an entire third semester. If you plan on seeing all the new content Royal has to offer (and you should as it's the best part of the game), then you should do your best to max out these new confidants as soon as possible. You will be introduced to both these confidants early on.

The Faith confidant will be available for most of the game, and initially maxes out at just rank 5. This gives you ample time to hit the soft cap before the end of the time limit. The Councillor confidant on the other hand will be unavailable starting in mid-September, and has a hard cap of mid-November if you plan on maxing out. Make sure to prioritize both of these confidants if you plan on seeing everything.

7 Prioritize the Confidants With the Best Abilities

Every confidant in the game will have nice bonuses along the way as a reward for advancing them. There are a number in the game that are significantly more important than others. While these are not as important as Faith or Councillor given they don’t lock you out of a large chunk of the game, you will have a much harder time beating the game without them. Star’s later ranks allow you to escape battles automatically and freely swap out party members in a battle without losing their turn. Maxing out Moon lets unused party members gain the same EXP as though they were in battle.

Maxing Temperance lets you go out at night even if you spent the day in a palace or mementos. And lastly, hitting just rank 7 on Chariot enables your ability to ‘auto win’ battles against enemies significantly weaker than you. This will trivialize grinding toward the end of the game and allow you to hit the level cap in a fraction of the time it would take normally.

6 You Got Anymore of Those SP Adhesives?

In your run through the first palace of the game, you should start running out of skill points quickly. Fortunately, there is a very useful accessory available early on. Starting at rank 5, the Death confidant will start selling you accessories. The real important one is the SP adhesive 3. When equipped, this accessory will restore 7 SP every turn in battle.

This will significantly reduce the number of SP restorative items you will need on hand. The accessory can be purchased starting at rank 5, and see a half-price reduction at rank 7, so if you are short on funds it may be best to wait until Death is a little further along.

5 Use Your Days Productively

This one might seem obvious, but the increased time available in Royal compared to vanilla is quite significant. Those of you starting with Royal will see significantly fewer instances of Morgana telling you to go to bed instead of doing something productive.

Even on days when there are no confidants available, you can always be studying or finding something around town that improves your social stats. Speaking of social stats.

4 Take Advantage of Free Social Stat Increases

The social stat system may not be as important as it was in Persona 4, but it still prevents you from advancing certain confidants until you have gotten to a certain point. The best social stat increases are the ones that can be boosted without passing time. Riding the train to school will occasionally prompt you to read something on hand. Getting through books in the game will increase the social stat associated with it.

Feeding nutrients to the plant in your room will give you a sizable boost to your kindness stat. Answering questions in class will give you a free point of knowledge. Don’t forget to check for the crossword on the back table in Leblanc, as answering the highlighted section will also boost your knowledge. There is also a blue couch in Kichijoji that will give you a boost to your guts for sitting on it.

3 Velvet Room Utilities

One of the lesser discussed mechanics of Persona 5 Royal is the itemize Persona system. Throughout the game, you will acquire items like the blank card or the black kogatana. These items can be turned into gear or skill cards in the velvet room. By acquiring some of the most powerful Persona in the game, you can also use the itemize system to turn them into equally powerful gear.

This mechanic is not overly important until the end game, but keep in mind that the best gear in the game is locked behind this system. Keep working on your compendium and don’t forget to check back, later on, to see what hidden gear you might be sitting on!

2 Advance Confidants More Quickly

There are a few things to know if you want to min/max your time spent with confidants. As you progress through a confidant's ranks, you will notice that certain answers will get you further to that confidant's next rank. You can use this helpful guide to know which answers will get you closest to that next rank. For your first run-through, you may just want to go in blind.

The other, more encouraged path is to have a Persona on hand that matches the arcana of the confidant you are working on. In between palace sections, you should fuse everything on hand and use the compendium to acquire cheap personas that match the confidants you are working on. Matching the two will significantly expedite the rank-up process.

1 Negotiations

The negotiation system in Persona 5 Royal will be how you acquire new persona’s during gameplay. After hitting an enemy's weakness, or in some cases just getting them low on health, they will negotiate with you for their lives. You can use this chance to ask for money, an item, or outright ask them to join your party. There is a system for matching their personality type with your answer, but the easiest method is just to upgrade your confidants.

Many of them will make negotiations easier with certain types of enemies, like all female shadows or a party member stepping in if you fail and let you try another answer. Maxing out the Sun arcana will let you auto win most negotiations, and at rank 10 let you negotiate with shadows at significantly higher levels than your own.
