As reported by Euro Gamer, Sonic Team's boss Takashi Iizuka recently revealed in an interview with Famitsu that 2022 was the biggest year in Sonic history. The developer also teased more upcoming surprises for Sonic fans in 2023, including new Sonic Frontiers content.

There is no doubt that this year was incredible for every Sonic fan in the world. First, we received Sonic The Hedgehog 2 blockbuster earlier this year, which became a massive commercial success at the box office. Then SEGA releases Sonic Origins as a remaster collection of some memorable Sonic titles from the past. Then, the time arrived for a new era in gaming for Sonic with Frontiers, an entry that did stand out from all its predecessors, thanks to massive changes in gameplay. Eventually, this incredible year came to an end with the Sonic Prime animated TV series that went live a few weeks earlier on Netflix.

"This past year was the biggest year in Sonic history, including the release of the movie sequel, new titles Sonic Origins and Sonic Frontiers, and the Netflix animation Sonic Prime," Iizuka said to Famitsu. "We are preparing a second wave to keep the fans happy and maintain that momentum going into 2023. We already announced additional content for Sonic Frontiers, but there is a lot more outside of that, so please look forward to it."

Already, we do know that Sonic Frontiers is supposed to receive loads of new content in 2023, but what we are really excited about is what could be next for Sonic in the gaming scene. Of course, the huge financial success of Sonic Frontiers has already made it clear to Sonic Team that a new open-world approach could be the future of the series, but we are still waiting for that official confirmation from SEGA on a sequel.

Previously, SEGA did reveal that Sonic Frontiers managed to reach over 2.5 million unit sales in a bit over a month after its launch. We can expect the number raises significantly throughout 2023 when the planned free content arrives in three different updates.
