Video games set in America’s wild west are few and far between. With Rockstar Games’ Red Dead Redemption series ruling the roost in the open-world genre, Desperados has reared its head for the first time in over a decade to reclaim its place in the real-time tactics genre.

Desperados III was announced by THQ Nordic this morning at Gamescom 2018 in Cologne, Germany, with a particularly interesting trailer. It opens up with a classic duel in the middle of a dusty street as two stubbly, square-jawed cowboys prepare to draw their pistols. In an instant, one gunslinger floored his opponent along with a dangerous man who also pulled a weapon while waiting in the wings. The celebration is short-lived as the hero is taken out by another cowboy who was hiding in the distance.

The scene then begins again as the original shooter takes out all his aggressors in quick succession giving way to an alternative timeline which sees a number of gunmen appear and engage each other in combat.

The scene then plays out for the third time with shooters on the rooves of buildings, enormous characters bursting out of nearby saloons and all manner of gun-slinging chaos ensuing.

Desperados III is coming soon for Xbox One, PlayStation 4 and PC. Desperados is not the only series that could be resurrected by THQ Nordic as the company also recently acquired the rights to classics Timesplitters and Second Sight.
