Titanfall’s Titans Were Originally More Like Tanks but then they Were Changed to Humanoid

Would Respawn’s upcoming shooter Titanfall have the same charm if it didn’t have its titular Titans, but simply machines more similar to tanks? Probably not, but that’s exactly what it had at the beginning, before the developers decided to evolve them, as explained by Community Manager Abbie Heppe in an interview to the Japanese website Gamer.

Initially the design was inspired by tanks, but this is a game in which you play in the same field as human characters after all, so operation was changed to the mechanics of humanoids, so that you can move smoothly. They’ve been designed to move smoothly like human beings so that players won’t be uncomfortable if they change suddenly to a titan after a fighting on foot for a while.

That’s a good explanation, even if honestly I would have been content even with “because Titans just friggin cool!” But I guess development studios with a pedigree like Respawn’s take design decisions due to reasons that are a little deeper than that.
