A game adaptation of graphic novel Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: The Last Ronin was in the works, a recent interview with Polygon has revealed.
The announcement came via Doug Rosen, senior vice president for games and emerging media at Paramount Global, who described the upcoming title as a darker and more mature action-RPG in a similar vein to Sony Santa Monica's recent God of War titles. Although details beyond this are scarce, with the game being a few years off according to Rosen, he clarified that it would "be authentic to the story of The Last Ronin arc," targeting an older audience. Unsurprisingly, the developer hasn't been named yet either, but it's been noted Paramount's found "the right partner" and that it would be a AAA project.
First published in 2020, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: The Last Ronin is a five-part miniseries following the last surviving turtle, Michaelangelo, as he fights against the Foot Clan to avenge the other turtles and Master Splinter. Keeping true to the premise of the story, the game will be a single-player affair. Kevin Eastman was responsible for penning the narrative, with the original concept being conceived by franchise co-creator Peter Laird in the late '80s. The series is currently being followed up by another miniseries, titled The Last Ronin - Lost Years, that's slated to run for four issues overall.
While The Last Ronin is the only Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtle game currently announced, Rosen teased that there would be "much more" from the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles franchise in video games.
Just last year, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles saw a return to prominence within the gaming industry after some quieter years, with the release of both Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Shredder's Revenge and Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: The Cowabunga Collection.
Shredder's Revenge was a brand-new beat 'em up from developer Tribute Games, which had previously found success with 2020s Panzer Paladin. It received a great 8 out of 10 score from DualShockers, and it was praised for being a great retro throwback. Conversely, The Cowabunga Collection is a compilation of 13 classic titles, ranging from 1989 to 1994, that was given a similarly glowing 8.5 out of 10 score by DualShockers.
