For years now, fans have been asking Bethesda Game Studios for a plethora of remasters of some of the studio's past work. Some of the most noteworthy of these games have included Fallout 1Fallout 3, and The Elder Scrolls III: Morrowind. If it were left up to one Todd Howard though, the studio would never remaster any of these titles.

Speaking with The Guardian, Todd Howard, Director at Bethesda Game Studios, spoke a bit about remasters and his overall aversion to them. Despite remastering The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim a few years ago, Howard said, "For Skyrim Remastered, we had done some work on it but it was already pretty visually close. But for something like Morrowind, my personal preference is not to remaster it."

Howard continued by saying that he thinks platform holders Sony, Microsoft, and Nintendo have done great work by making older games more accessible. “I’m happy that you can play Morrowind now on an Xbox One, as it’s backwards compatible. I’m really happy that Microsoft, Sony, Nintendo and others are making it easier for people to play [older games] as they were played at the time. I actually prefer that over remasters," Howard said. He went on to speak more specifically about Morrowind by saying, “I’d rather you play Morrowind the way it was ... I think the age is part of its identity."

As for what he thinks the future will hold with playing old games, Howard said that streaming technology will hopefully make accessibility easier. "I think streaming technology is definitely coming, and it’s gonna make people’s access to games infinitely easier. You’ve seen it happen to music and movies and I think it’s a great thing," Howard predicted.

We'll have to wait and see what the future holds with streaming technology, but Howard is correct that platform holders have made it really easy to play games in 2018. If you want to play Morrowind right now, all you have to do is put your original Xbox disc into an Xbox One -- which is pretty insane. Even if Bethesda and Todd Howard don't have a desire to remaster their past games, you'll surely be able to find new ways to continue revisiting old games in the future.
