All the way back in 2015, HumaNature Studios successfully crowdfunded ToeJam & Earl: Back in the Groove, a successor to the classic Sega Genesis series, and picked up Adult Swim Games as a publisher. Today, HumaNature Studios founder Greg Johnson revealed that the game will be releasing on PC and consoles sometime this fall, though Adult Swim Games is no longer publishing.

According to Greg Johnson, the decision was a mutual one between HumaNature Studios and Adult Swim Games. The latter is releasing several big games later this year, and ToeJam & Earl: Back in the Groove risked being pushed back even further if Adult Swim Games remained the publisher. While self-publishing can be risky, the developers confirmed to backers that they have experience in doing that, so the game's launch should go smoothly:

"Going forward Adult Swim Games is no longer going to be our publisher. Instead we are going back to self-publishing! Adult Swim Games has some other big titles they plan to launch this summer so when Back in the Groove pushed back, we both agreed that it made sense for them to hand us the reigns, rather than taking a chance on this getting pushed back any more. Also I’d like to say how deeply grateful I and all of us here at HumaNature Studios are to Adult Swim Games. We wouldn’t have gotten this game to this point without them…seriously. Thank You Adult Swim!"

When it comes to the game's state in development, the developers plan on releasing a Closed Beta build to Early Access backers, which will be active between July 5 and July 19. As for the console versions, HumaNature Studios is planning on submitting ToeJam & Earl: Back in the Groove to Nintendo for certification soon, and will be doing the same with the other versions in the coming weeks and months.
