While some may be satisfied by recreating historic or modern wars in RTS games, others look towards the fantastical. Sure, it's entertaining watching the Romans tackle countless other civilizations, but what about elves and orcs, lizardmen and demons? That's where the Total War: Warhammer series comes in. The franchise of RTS games just announced another new title, Total War: Warhammer 3, and it will include more fantasy races to pit against one another, like the Cathay and Kislev.

For those that don't know, the Warhammer universe isn't what you'd call "soft fantasy." It's remarkably dark, even more so than the Witcher franchise. There are blood gods, a race of vermin that destroy life from planet to planet, and massive space-hulks that can take on entire armies by themselves. Total War: Warhammer 3 is continuing to invest in those powerful, terrifying races with the introduction of the Cathay, among other species, races, and factions.

The Cathay in the Warhammer universe is more than simple warriors. They practice magic, and have large, varied armies filled with talented sorcerers and warriors. The Cathay even have access to gunpowder technology, which will undoubtedly give their units an advantage in Total War: Warhammer 3.

Alongside the Cathay, Total War: Warhammer 3 will be introducing the Kislev, as well as the factions of Chaos. This spread of different factions and races will give players even more heroes and creatures to pit against each other. Of course, Total War: Warhammer 3 isn't changing its formula radically. The game will still play like the others, just on a grander scale. The game's campaign will also feature choices for players to make, each impacting the world of Total War: Warhammer 3.

So far, Total War: Warhammer 3 doesn't have a release date, although the game is set to release some time this year. Players can pre-order the game from Steam or the Epic Games Store now.
