Koei Tecmo announced that a free-to-play version of Toukiden 2 called Toukiden 2: Free Alliance Version will be coming west for PlayStation 4 and PlayStation Vita on May 30.

This version of Toukiden 2 allows players to join up to 4 friends in online missions to hunt monsters and explore the game's massive open world. To participate in missions, players will need to use the "appropriate amount of Stamina", all players begin the game with 3 Stamina units that require 8-hours to replenish. However, there are items called Gems can be collected to also replenish the Stamina and these can be purchased via the PSN.

Additionally, free-to-play players can play the story up to the end of the first chapter of the game. So, if they decide to purchase the full game their save file, items, and materials will be transferred over.

Although Toukiden 2 is a game that we gave a 9 out of 10, I'm not sure a model that has such an extended replenishment period and microtransactions is a proper way to get new fans interested in the series. However, after a few online missions there's the option to skip the strange microtransaction model and purchase the full game where Stamina won't be an issue.
