Even in the early hours of Tunic, when the grass is green, and the sun shines bright, you'll deal with enemies that remind you Dark Souls was just as much an inspiration as The Legend Of Zelda. Fans tend to agree that the toughest of enemies is one of the game's bosses, the aptly named Boss Scavenger.

Scavenger is guarding the last key you need to find, the Green Key of the Hidden Vault. Get ready to dodge, use their tricks against them, and consider checking the Options menu.

No Fail Mode (Optional)

Tunic Accessibility Menu No Fail Mode Highlighted

To get this completely out of the way, do remember that if Scavenger is proving far too annoying to deal with, even with the following advice, under the Accessibility section of the Options Menu is the No Fail Mode. Certainly not necessary to beat Boss Scavenger with this mode on, it's also perfectly reasonable by the game's own standards should you need it. No Fail Mode only erases damage and death, so this is not an instant win mode, only an easy mode. For those that care, No Fail Mode does not remove Achievement progress. Trophies and Achievements will still be earned, and this goes for any section you use No Fail Mode.

Again this is optional, many players will no doubt prefer to have stakes behind this fight, this is just a reminder the mode is there, as is an option to remove Stamina limitations, meaning you can infinitely dodge and block. For the sake of transparency, No Fail Mode and No Stamina Restrictions were not used during the game capture images below. The following methods will work for either play style.

Dodging Boss Scavenger's Attacks

Tunic Taking Damage During Boss Scavenger Fight

Boss Scavenger is a master of many weapons, and each weapon will have its specific method to avoid damage. To start, Boss Scavenger will always attempt a quick and powerful blow as their introduction scene plays. This cheap shot is often from a pistol, which fires in a spread like a shotgun. Using your shield or dodging to the side can prevent you from taking the hit, but you'll have to time it correctly, or you'll still end up losing a good chunk of your health. Hiding behind the barrels also works; they are indestructible, so the bullets will not go through them, although this tactic will only work for the following times. Scavenger fires as you won't have the time or camera view to find a barrel.

Scavenger also has a long sword, another trick they can pull in his introduction as well as anytime during the rest of the right. Scavenger will raise his blade high, it will glow purple, and Scavenger will lunge towards you with a long sweep. The purple glow was your hint to prepare a dodge, so keep your eye on when Scavenger leaps to perfect the timing.

This is not the only attack the sword has. Boss Scavenger can also stab the ground after a lunge, which will send a purple shockwave through the arena you'll have to dodge over. Remember to dodge into it as this will be easier to time.

Finally, Scavenger will throw small yet powerful bombs. These will often be hard to see and can come randomly, so always have your eye out for them. If you can, try hanging around barrels near Scavenger in brief lulls of the fight. You'll hopefully be protected from the blast, and Scavenger will be so close to their bomb that they will accidentally damage themselves. This does a good amount of damage for little effort, but admittedly a lot of chance as well.

How To Stun Lock Boss Scavenger

Tunic Boss Scavenger Holding Shield During Fight

Remember that Grappling Hook you used to enter the Hidden Vault through the Quarry? That Hook is the almost perfect counter to the start-up of Scavenger's attack. When Scavenger is away from you and preparing an attack, lock onto them and shoot your Grappling Hook. This can pull Scavenger forward and disorient them, leaving them open to any attack you wish. If Scavenger has too long to prepare, they will instead attack you before you finish Grappling. Even with that in mind, this can turn into an easy way to stun the Boss as long as you bring plenty of MP restoring items.

Your sword will do damage, but with how spry Scavenger can be, you may find they jump away before you do enough to justify the spent MP. Ranged weapons such as bombs and your wand are likely your better option, especially since Scavenger will likely not be grappled directly to you. The difference between one or two sword swings versus a bomb or two will be a noticeable portion of this boss's health.

Tunic Firing Gun At Boss Scavenger

If you didn't get the Gun from the Quarry, do so before fighting Scavenger. The Gun uses a lot of MP but has not only high damage, like the Grappling Hook, but it will also stun Scavenger. If you want to stun lock this boss, the best you can go in with the Hook and the Gun and plenty of MP restoratives. Grapple, shoot, repeat. Restore MP when needed. If done correctly, this tough fight can be over in mere seconds, and the Green Key is yours.
