Earlier today, Atlus announced they will be localizing Aquaplus' visual novel SRPG Utawarerumono: Mask of Deception and Mask of Truth for the PlayStation 4 and PlayStation Vita in North America and Europe in 2017.

Evidently, the publisher ran into a problem during localization involving a scene depicting an adult spanking a young character.

Atlus writes:

A brief note on content: While Atlus is committed to bringing over games that are as true to their original forms as possible, in the case of Mask of Deception, a scene had to have a small content edit to comply with various regional regulations about the depiction of physical discipline to minors. We worked with Aquaplus to keep the scope of the editing to an absolute minimum, and we both agree the change made to the scene in the game still conveys its full meaning without running into issues.

While it's true, the scene in question could stir some trouble with visual novel fans, the publisher is transparent and honest about what they had to do. As of right now we aren't sure what the scene will be replaced with.
