While the second world war has inspired countless video games, the first one is a conflict which is rarely touched upon in this medium. It mostly has to do with WWII having a clearly identifiable “evil” to vanquish. “The War to End All Wars” is a murkier battle which was fought for no real good reason.
Instead of releasing a straight up military game that takes place during the war, Ubisoft is doing something different with Valiant Hearts: The Great War. This game will tell a more personal tale about four people who participate in the battle. This 2D adventure puzzler will show the struggles that the characters have to endure and the things that they do and sacrifice for those they love and care for.
The game runs on the UbiArt Framework engine which was also used to create Rayman: Origins, Legends, and Child of Light. Although the art style is animated, it carries a somber and dark tone. As you can see from the trailer below, it perfectly captures the horror of the Great War.
Valiant Hearts: The Great War will be released on PC, PlayStation 3, PlayStation 4, Xbox 360 and Xbox One on June 25.
