It seems as though every few months, rumors start to pop up somewhere on the Internet claiming that Valve is working on the much-requested Left 4 Dead 3. While the idea of a third installment in the beloved zombie-killing series is alluring to many, it doesn't sound as though we should expect a new entry any time soon.

In a new report from IGN, Valve has made clear that it is not currently working on Left 4 Dead 3 in any way, shape, or form. "It’s clear some people are having fun creating misinformation to spin up the community and other outlets," Valve said in a statement given to IGN. "Unfortunately, for now a new L4D game is not something we’re working on."

Even though no Left 4 Dead game is said to be currently in the works though, Valve did also say that it had previously entertained the idea of a new entry in the series. "We did briefly explore some Left 4 Dead next opportunities a few years ago," Valve explained. "But we are absolutely not working on anything L4D related now, and haven’t for years."

Over the past year, a few different instances of Left 4 Dead 3 rumors have popped up. One such rumor stemmed from a mysterious video that appeared online and seemed to indicate that a third entry was coming. However, this video was later discovered to just be a fan project of sorts that was just for fun.

More recently, YouTube channel Valve News Network has reported that work on Left 4 Dead 3 was being done back in 2012 before eventually being scrapped in 2017. Valve News Network's Tyler McVicker also says that a VR iteration of Left 4 Dead currently exists as well, but whether this game will ever see the light of day remains to be seen.

Even if Valve is being truthful about the fact that no new Left 4 Dead games are currently in the works, it seems as though the hole left by the franchise will be filled in the future. Currently, developer Turtle Rock Studios is working on Back 4 Blood, which is said to be a spiritual successor to the Left 4 Dead series. As of this writing though, no release windows or gameplay footage of Back 4 Blood have been unveiled.
