Valve's New VR Headset "The Index" Quietly Revealed, Coming May 2019
Valve Corporation secretly announced (via Steam) that their new VR headset is coming in May and is called the Valve Index.
Valve Corporation (the prolific company behind Steam) has finally revealed the first image of its long-anticipated virtual reality headset. The company has long been supporters of virtual reality. They partnered with the HTC Vive in the early days of modern VR and claim to have three VR games currently in development. Now they will try their hand at developing and producing their own virtual reality headset, called the Valve Index.
The Index was soft-announced on Friday when a Steam product page popped up for the device. The page contains only the above image and text reading “Upgrade your experience. May 2019.” Other details are scarce.
There is no mention of the SteamVR Knuckle controllers or the aforementioned upcoming VR games Gabe Newell confirmed were in development during a Reddit AMA in early 2017. Presumably, those are major aspects of Valve’s VR plans and will be explored in May when the headset launches.
What we do know is that this headset was leaked last November in a report from UploadVR. At that time, it was rumored that the headset would have a wide, 135-degree field-of-view. This is in comparison to the Oculus Rift, HTC Vive, and Vive Pro’s 110-degree FOV. The headset was also rumored to have a display quality similar to the Vive Pro, which supports a resolution of 2880 x 1600.
Interestingly, the May 2019 date lines up very well with the release date of a few other VR headsets. Oculus has announced that the Oculus Quest and the Oculus Rift S will launch sometime in Spring 2019. It will be interesting to see what Valve brings to the table with all the eyes that will on VR this spring.
Virtual Reality fans will have some decisions to make when Valve fully reveals what the Index is later this May. This story is still developing, and we will update as more information is revealed.
