There are a lot of video games that’s entire artistic style is based on imitating life. That's great in its own right but when a game takes that a step further that’s when a game really starts to stand out. There are a plethora of games that aim to look like something that no one's experienced. Those are some of the games that unlock parts of our imagination that players might’ve never known existed.

This list will show players some of the most artistically individual video games available. It is not to say one is better than another but to showcase beautiful games.

10 10/10 Loop Hero

Loop Hero Game Cover

Loop Hero has CRT pixel art which makes it all the more fun to look at. The way the game allows players to build the map themselves adds a level of artistic value to the placement of areas. Maps that players end up creating become massive organic pieces.

It's pleasant to see environments that are available grow into lovely thriving lakes, mountains, or cities. The animations though they look like part of an NES are stunning in their own right.

9 9/10 Limbo

Limbo Spider Coming After The Main Protagonist

Limbo receives praise from many as a game that not only represents itself as a video game but also as a form of art. Many people have compared this game to film noir movies and the bleak aesthetic really makes this pop. The game has minimalist shadow-like backdrops and figures.

These allow the player to feel like they’re traversing through Limbo. The game's style drives it. It creates a lot of interesting effects using light throughout the journey.

8 8/10 Borderlands

Borderlands Combat Against Raiders

The art direction from Borderlands might look cel-shaded but that is not the case at all. The style replicates that of a comic book and that’s why it is so stylistically unique. Everything from the design of the terrain around the player to the different types of enemies makes for some glorious eye candy.

Yes, some of the lands can be barren but the comic book art style keeps players wanting to explore new areas and see if they’re pleasing to the eyes.

7 7/10 Okami

Okami Running Towards A House Area

Okami has a unique art style that packs itself with color to create astonishing visuals. Everything in this game is made to pay its respects to the Japanese ink wash painting art style. Everything down to the main character's movements is stylized.

Running around will cause pretty plants to grow from the main character’s footsteps this adds to the already lovely areas the player travels through. Fights in the game are also artistically sound and incorporate the use of a brush as an attack.

6 6/10 Super Mario Sunshine

Mario On A Tight Rope On Isle Delfino

Super Mario Sunshine sets a tropical island theme and sticks to it. The visuals are fun and full of color with everything looking like it’s going to burst through a player’s screen. The game revolving around cleaning up paint makes it so that the before and after product of cleaning up a level captures the player's attention.

Everything about every area is comforting to be a part of. Playing through this art style is a lot softer than other titles but that's what makes it one of the best artistic settings.

5 5/10 Dark Souls

Dark Souls Anor Londo

Dark Souls has some of the best-looking designs in gaming in terms of the cohesion that its areas bring about. The medieval romanticism art style that engulfs the game adds to the melancholic tones that the player’s adventures bring. It’s not just that the graphics are good.

The graphics are good but the artistic choices in the atmosphere of each location create something that is undeniably on par with renaissance pieces. Anyone who has jumped into this difficult world can tell someone that it's not just the challenge of the game that catches them but also the atmosphere.

4 4/10 FEZ

Gomez Talking To An Older Man

FEZ has a Futurism style that’s accompanied by its distinctive cross between 2D and 3D graphics. Every area feels like a moving art piece that gets the player's attention. The game is meant to be taken in slowly and methodically. There is no pressure or rush in its experience and that allows players to bask in its artistic subtleties.

It is one of the most beautiful games in the 8-bit genre. Seeing something that was originally supposed to be 2D make the switch to 3D and then back to 2D in the blink of an eye is something special.

3 3/10 Cult Of The Lamb

Cult of the Lamb Three Of The Bishops

In an interview with Gamerant the art director, James Pierman, said,“ the art style in Cult of the Lamb is still unapologetically cartoon,” and this farcically explains this game well. The game is a combination of horrific imagery mixed with cute cuddly creatures. Even the most difficult and horrific of bosses have a cute edge to them.

That leaves the player feeling confused about whether they want to hug them or run away from them. It is that unique aspect that makes the style fit it so well.

2 2/10 Psychonauts 2

Psychonauts 2 Raz Inside Of The Brain In A Jar

Psychonauts 2 thrives inside of surrealism. What’s great about this is the levels that can be created because of this. Everything feels like it belongs to itself as no two areas look the same. The color palettes are constantly changing to create a different emotional feel.

Whatever the character whose mind the player is inside of is feeling is what’s given through the textures and themes of the areas. Overall, Psychonauts 2 is one of the most unique concepts out of the bunch.

1 1/10 Cuphead

Cuphead Dice Boss

Cuphead's art style can be appreciated by anyone who understands its hard work. It has a gorgeous rubber hose style. The rubber hose style is the 1930s cartoon aesthetic that was placed into the game’s artistic atmosphere.

What makes all of this stand out is the fact that the game has watercolored backgrounds. On top of that, all of the frames of the game were hand drawn and then inked to place into the game later on.
