Watchers is a Top-down Battle Royale Where Death is Not the End
Watchers is a new battle royale game that brings some new ideas to what happens when you meet your maker.
I think it’s fair to say that the battle royale genre has quickly become oversaturated since PUBG and Fortnite blew up. That said, there is still room for innovation in the game mode and it’s great to see titles like Watchers trying new things. Watchers plays from a top-down perspective and makes sure that even when you die, you’ll have an impact on who wins. Check out the trailer below.
Watchers starts as 24-player battle royale. You’ll run and shoot through a battlefield that looks like suburban America in the 1960s. However, if you do get murdered by another player, your game is not over. Instead, you become one of the Watchers and get to influence the final outcome.
The first thing you can do as a Watcher is bet on which player will win the game. It’s not completely clear what you can do with the money you earn from this. That said, it seems safe to guess that you’ll be able to purchase skins. To help make those bets a little safer, you’ll get access to other game-changing abilities.
In the trailer, we see the Watchers doing a few things to “change the rules”. First, we see someone getting a refrigerator dropped on them and killed. Hopefully, that’s a rarity, as it could be easily exploited if used on whoever killed you. We also see the abilities to grant a player a speed boost and to vote on where the circle will move for the next round. It will important that this is carefully balanced, but there is a lot of potential here.
Publisher Alawar Premium usually puts out weird games with interesting takes on old formulas. Thus, I’m intrigued to see how Watchers fares. Currently, the game is set to come out sometime this year on PC.
