What I’m Not Playing This Week: Arkham Asylum
We here at DualShockers like doing this a little differently from a lot of the other guys. Sometimes, they’ll tell you about the games they’re playing in an effort to let you get to know the writers, and understand their multifaceted taste in games. It’s a great strategy, but we decided it can be just as informative (perhaps more so!) to hear about the games, of the thousands of possibilities available to us, we happen to NOT be playing.
So hit the jump to find out the games some of our writers aren’t playing this week, as well as why I’m personally not playing this week’s game, Batman: Arkham Asylum.
As a gamer, there’s no reason you should be aware that today is Superbowl Sunday. Seriously, it’s fine. You’re fine. Just spend today catching up on sleep and playing Minecraft like you do every Sunday. I myself only remembered the specific events of today because I tried to go grocery shopping and found the chips and dip aisle was in a condition not unlike a carrion buffalo left under a flock of hungry ravens. It should go without saying, then, that I’m not playing, say, Madden 2011 or anything.
No no, this week I’m going to tell you why I’m not playing a game I actually own: Batman: Arkham Asylum. It’s a fantastic game, and I know I’d enjoy playing it. I picked it up during the last ridiculous Steam sale, when the GOTY edition of the game was something like two or three bucks. Honestly, how can you turn that down? But that means I have to play it on PC, and as it happens I have serious trouble with third person games on a mouse and keyboard. Normally, I’m very adamant about the PC control scheme being categorically superior to a standard console controller, but third person adventure games (things like Zelda or Uncharted) are among the very few exceptions. They’re definitely more comfortable on a solid gamepad. My solution? Buy a bluetooth dongle for my PC and hook up my Wiimote. PERFECT. I have some pretty great software for it to set up any sorts of key bindings I like on it, so all I have to do is…
Aw crap, where’d my Classic Controller go? Poop. You can’t play this game just with the Wiimote, even with the Nunchuck. Maybe I’ll try binding some functions to waggle, just like a real Wii developer? Man, that seems like a lot trouble. I’ll do it later.
… And that’s been the past two months or so. I’m sure I’ll get around to it eventually. Probably before the sequel comes out. Probably. But for now, I’m definitely not playing Batman: Arkham Asylum.
So what about my fellow writers? I bet there’s tons of games they’re not playing. I reached a few of them for comment this weekend, and here’s what they had to say:
Allen Park says: “Dead Space 2, because my wee-woo still drips urine at the thought of Amnesia: The Dark Descent”
Justin Hutchison says: “I’m not playing Ghost Trick because I don’t have the money”
John Colaw says: “DC Universe Online. If I start playing a game where I can literally run around being best friends with Batman, I would no longer have a reason to go outside.”
