Celebrated adventure game and "walking simulator" What Remains of Edith Finch is the next regular free offering from the Epic Games Store. The game from developer Giant Sparrow originally released in 2017 and was highly praised for its combined narrative and gameplay.

The creator-focused Epic Games Store launched in December, offering 88 percent revenue to developers. Since its launch, the store has offered Super Meat Boy and Subnautica for free—though these were free for a limited time (with Super Meat Boy still being free for the time being), those who grab these deals will have access to the games indefinitely.

Unlike the offerings of Xbox Live Gold and PlayStation Plus, there is no subscription needed for the free Epic Games Store offerings. To offer some competition, the Epic Games Store has locked a few games down for exclusivity, including The Walking Dead: The Final Season on PC and Supergiant's Hades in early access.

With Xbox and PlayStation having to offer multiple free titles every month, reactions to the offered titles are usually quite mixed, with a mixture of blockbusters, indie darlings, and obscure titles. Epic Games appears to be taking a more careful approach in releasing free games every two weeks, selecting highly popular and acclaimed titles thus far.

What Remains of Edith Finch focuses on a family with an apparent curse, and the last of the family's line (the titular Edith Finch) learning about her family members' deaths by exploring an old family home as the player goes through these memories. It's a game that I personally missed on, and one that I might try to pick up this year as I play catch-up.

What Remains of Edith Finch will be free on the Epic Games Store from January 10 to 25. If you haven't yet, it might be the time to find out what just what remains, I guess.
