HBO's The Last of Us show just had its first image released and naturally has people wondering when exactly does it come out?

Critical darling The Last of Us was originally released back in 2013, followed by the just as acclaimed The Last of Us Part II last year.

In-between those two releases, there were constant rumors of a The Last of Us movie coming at some point, but HBO got us really excited when they announced that they were working on a show based on the property, which just had its first look revealed.

First Look At HBO's The Last of Us

After first being announced as happening about a year and a half ago, casting for The Last of Us was finally revealed back in February.

This is where we learned that The Mandalorian's Pedro Pascal would be playing Joel, while Game of Thrones' Bella Ramsey would be playing Ellie. In comparison, these castings were received much better than the recent Mario movie casting news.

Fans have been celebrating what was formerly known as Outbreak Day, now known as The Last of Us Day after the pandemic, on September 26, which is the day that the outbreak happened in the game.

There are often various things done on this day from Naughty Dog or just the fans, but there were teases that we were going to get something special on this year's date and that we did courtesy of Neil Druckmann's Twitter.

This is our first look at The Last of Us TV show and it looks like someone grabbed a screenshot from the game pretty much. The only disappointment is that the shot is only from behind, so hopefully we'll get another glimpse sooner rather than later.

When Does The Last of Us Show Come Out?

This is actually a question that has not been officially answered by HBO, but we do have an indication of when it should probably be coming out regardless.

Filming is still ongoing for the show after starting back in July, with reports previously stating that filming was expected to last until June 2022. This is certainly a long filming schedule, but that was the original report.

An actual mention of a release date came courtesy of the director of the first episode's Instagram page. Kantemir Balagov is directing the pilot and has The Last of Us listed in his Instagram bio with 2022 next to it.

Obviously, this is far from confirmation since he is only the director of the episode and does not decide when something will release, but you would think he may have some sort of idea.

Even so, it would be assumed that The Last of Us will premiere sometime in late 2022 or early 2023 just based on the supposed June 2021 wrap up of filming. This would give time for post-production and get the show ready for television.

Hopefully, we will get more information about The Last of Us show sometime soon, including a confirmed release window for the show at least.
