Pokemon Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl take us back to the Sinnoh region once again and that means you will have to figure out which is the best starter to pick at the beginning of the game once again.

The Diamond and Pearl remakes are games that fans have been asking for over the years and are now finally here.

As with every mainline Pokemon game, selecting your starter is one of the hardest decisions in the game and this time you will be picking between Turtwig, Chimchar, and Piplup.

Who Are Turtwig, Chimchar, and Piplup?

As with every mainline Pokemon game, players are able to choose one starter from a group of Grass, Fire, and Water types. For the fourth generation of games that are being remade here, that would be Turtwig, Chimchar, and Piplup respectively.

Turtwig is a Tiny Leaf Pokemon that resembles a turtle. It evolves into Grotle at level 18 and then its final evolution Torterra at level 32.

In the anime, Turtwig and his evolutions played a big role in Ash's run through the Sinnoh region gyms as he eventually evolved into Torterra.

While Turtwig starts as simply a ground type, it becomes a Grass/Ground type when it evolves fully into Torterra. This allows it to learn Earthquake, which is a must-have move for this Pokemon and can make it very useful.

Chimchar is a Chimp Pokemon that evolves into Monferno at level 14 and Infernape at level 36.

Those who watched the Diamond and Pearl anime may remember Chimchar best as it mirrored the story of Charmander a bit by being abandoned by its trainer, in this case Ash's rival Paul, before joining Ash and taking down Paul later as Infernape.

Chimchar's line continued the trend that was started by Blaziken in Gen III with Fire/Fighting evolutions, as both Monferno and Infernape are Fire/Fighting types. By mixing in moves like Mach Punch and Close Combat, it can be a real force on top of its existing fire moves.

Piplup is the final starter and is the Penguin Pokemon that evolves into Prinplup at level 16 and Empoleon at Level 32.

In the anime, Piplup was Dawn's starter that was around all throughout Diamond and Pearl. Rather than making an impact in battle, Piplup never evolved and instead played a role in Dawn's contests.

While Prinplup remains a Water only type, the final evolution Empoleon becomes the dual type Water/Steel, which is definitely one of the most unique typings out there by being the only of its kind to this point.

Who Is The Best Starter In Pokemon Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl?

When it comes to who is the outright best starter in Pokemon Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl, the ultimate choice is up to you in your type of play style and the type of Pokemon you think you'll eventually need for your full team. However, we are going to assess things like typing and the gyms and such you will face and how helpful they are.

When looking at the first gym that can often be a hurdle, both Turtwig and Piplup seems like good options being Grass and Water types, while Fire will be at a disadvantage. However, if you level up your Chimchar to Monferno, it can learn Mach Punch and easily take down the gym.

The Sinnoh region is full of different water types that you could choose from to replace Piplup, so those looking for the most competitive team are probably going to want to skip that one.

That now leaves us with Turtwig and Chimchar to choose from. Turtwig's line is the more balanced defensive type, even with the powerful Earthquake, while Chimchar and its line are the more powerful offensively.

When taking into account this and the fact that Chimchar can dominate many of the gyms right from the start and then some of the later ones as well as it becomes a very strong Fire/Fighting type eventually, you will find it as the best overall option.

Regardless of this though, you can pick any of the three and still have a really good time on your adventure in Pokemon Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl.
