What Does 'Oiran' Mean in Demon Slayer?

As explained by Tengen, most women are sold in the Entertainment District because of poverty and debt. They are taken in by different houses that provide these girls with food and clothes.

Over time, these girls climb up in ranks in their houses, and the highest level for a courtesan is 'Oiran.' An Oiran in Demon Slayer is recognized all over the Yoshiwara District for her beauty. However, an Oiran also flaunts incredible skills and knowledge about different traditions besides her looks. And that's what puts an Oiran over other Courtesans. Also, that's the reason why the services of an Oiran come at a considerable sum of money, and only rich people in the country can afford their contracts.

In the anime, we saw Koinatsu of the Tokito House, who is an Oiran in Demon Slayer. Besides her, Suma and Hinatsuru, Tengen's wives, were also assigned the rank of an 'Oiran' when they suddenly disappeared.

On the other hand, Makio, Tengen's third wife, was undercover in the Ogimoto House as a courtesan. Unfortunately. a demon captures Makio after spotting her letters to Tengen. Whereas the whereabouts of Suma and Hinatsuru are still unknown in the anime.
